A boy whose arm was amputated in a farm-equipment accident received a $2.3 million settlement. In 2007, Juan Mondragon, then 12, was walking next to a tractor operated by his father when his long sleeve became caught in a power take-off system attached to the rear of the tractor, causing his left arm to be traumatically amputated. The arm was later surgically reattached, but Juan was left with essentially no sensation or function in his arm. A lawsuit was filed on Juan's behalf against the owner of the tractor, Fruitworld Growers LLC, alleging that it was negligent in the maintenance of the vehicle. Juan's attorney argued that the tractor lacked a protective shield that would have prevented the incident.
