The family of a woman who died in a helicopter crash because of an allegedly faulty rotor blade agreed to a $5.6 million settlement. In August 2008, Sandra Pearson, 38, died when the helicopter's main rotor blade broke apart, causing the helicopter to strike power lines, crash and burst into flames. Pearson's family claimed that defects were created in the main rotor blade during its manufacturing by Bell Helicopter Textron Inc., causing the blade to break apart during use. Plaintiff's counsel contended that when the helicopter was inspected 10 days prior to the crash, it was noted that a low rumble and vibration was felt from the rear of the aircraft. They argued that a centrifugal force variation during the helicopter start/stop cycles caused a fatigue crack in the defective blade, resulting in the crash.
