Police Officer Dies In Motorcycle Crash With School Bus

 

An Arlington police motorcycle officer was killed Wednesday morning in a fiery crash with a school bus.

Craig Story, 34, was a seven-year veteran of the force and the proud father of a 2-year-old son.

"This is a very difficult time for me personally and for this police department," said Arlington Police Chief Theron Bowman.

"It is very painful to have to announce that early today we lost one of our own."

The school bus driver and the nine students aboard escaped injury. The students, ages 6 to 12, were from Crow, Ditto and Dunn elementary schools, and Bailey and Young junior high schools.

The collision occurred about 7:15 a.m. at South Cooper Street and West Inwood Drive, near Arlington High School

Motorcycle Crash Results in 900k Settlement

A trucking company agreed to pay $900,000 to the mother of a motorcyclist who was fatally struck by one of its vehicles. On Aug. 14, 2007, Preston Timothy Gleason, 21, was hit by a tractor-trailer at the intersection of Highway 121 and Alma Drive in Collin County. The motorcyclist, who was wearing a helmet, died at the scene. His mother, Pam Gleason, sued truck driver Bobby Phillips and the truck's owner, McCraw Cargo Express LLC, alleging Phillips ran a red light. The defense argued that even though the motorcyclist had the green light, he should have allowed the intersection to clear before he entered it. The settlement was reached through mediation.

Motorcyclist Injured in Crash Receives 35k Settlement

 

A motorcyclist who sustained a broken ankle after he was hit by a car received a $35,000 settlement. In 2006, Kelly Rushing, then 60, was operating his motorcycle on Holcomb Street in Houston. He claimed he was attempting to make a right turn at an intersection when a vehicle driven by Jennifer Woods entered his lane and struck him, knocking him off his motorcycle. The incident resulted in a fractured ankle, which required physical therapy; and soft-tissue neck and back injuries, which required chiropractic treatment. Woods argued that Rushing caused the accident by failing to keep a proper lookout. The case ultimately settled, with Rushing receiving $25,000 for his injuries and $10,000 for the damage to his motorcycle.

Motorcyclist Dies After Hit-And-Run

 

Garland police are searching this morning for a dark-colored car that is believed to have caused a fatal accident in which a motorcyclist lost control of his bike and was run over by an 18-wheeler.

 Charles King, 72, of Dallas, was killed just before 11:30 p.m. Thursday on westbound Interstate 635, near Centerville Road.

Witnesses told police that King and another motorcyclist were traveling together when the car bumped King's bike, causing him to fall into the truck's path.Police said King was not wearing a helmet.

WFAA-TV reported that King was a well-known community activist and a member of the Keller Rat Pack, which organizes motorcycle runs for charity groups.

ANOTHER DEATH AS THE RESULT OF A MOTORCYCLE CRASH

 

A 47-year-old man died Saturday morning after his motorcycle crashed into a retaining wall.

Robert McCracken of Dallas died about 3 a.m. near a sharp curve at westbound U.S. Highway 175 and Bexar Street. No other vehicles were involved, said Dallas County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Kim Leach.

Motorcyclist Injured In Crash Gets Settlement

A motorcyclist seriously injured in a collision agreed to a $500,000 settlement to end his lawsuit against the driver who struck him. In May 2008, Javier Solis, then 42, claimed he was riding his motorcycle when Jason Gillespie made a left turn across four lanes of traffic and collided with him. Solis sustained left arm fractures, a left tibial plateau fracture, multiple broken ribs, a shoulder injury and several lacerations. He said the injuries left him with persistent weakness and numbness in his arm, which has prevented from returning to work as a contractor. Gillespie denied responsibility for the collision and argued Solis was speeding, despite eyewitness reports to the contrary.
