A woman who claimed a knee injury in a fall at a supermarket recovered $67,371. In 2007, Cathy Guillory, then 37, was at the checkout of a Kroger store in Katy when a bag slipped while the clerk was handing it to her. She bent over to prevent the bag from falling, leaning one hand on a credit card machine. The stand gave way, and Guillory fell to the floor. She claimed the screws had been missing from the stand for at least a week and the store was aware. Guillory claimed a chondromalacia patella in her left knee, requiring arthroscopic debridement. The jury found Guillory 49 percent liable and Kroger 51 percent liable, which reduced the $132,100 award.
